Aurorin CAD
Winter 2026 NewClaude code for Mechanical Engineers
There are 2 problems: The first, CAD software is slow and the second, designing with it is a tedious process with many steps. Aurorin solves both of these problems by being a CAD software built from the ground up on a modern tech stack with AI at its heart. Building the CAD kernel lets us fully leverage AI while modernizing execution speed. Almost all existing CAD software (Solidworks, NX, Creo, Catia, Fusion 360, Onshape etc) use the same couple of underlying CAD kernels built in the 80's. It's common for these programs to take 4 hours to open a file. Aurorin uses a custom parametric and B-Rep driven CAD Kernel built to take full advantage of modern CPUs and GPUs and be AI native.
AI Investor Summary
Aurorin CAD is building a next-generation, AI-native CAD software designed to overcome the speed and usability limitations of legacy systems. By developing a new CAD kernel, they aim to unlock significant technical differentiation and create a defensible moat in the massive engineering design market. The company is currently in its early stages, with a strong technical foundation but facing significant execution and market adoption risks.
Key Highlights
- ● Addressing fundamental, long-standing issues in the CAD market.
- ● Building a new CAD kernel from the ground up with AI integration as a core tenet.
- ● Strong educational background from a top-tier university (University of Waterloo).
Risk Factors
- ● Single founder: High risk for execution and burnout.
- ● Technical execution risk: Building a robust, performant CAD kernel is incredibly complex and resource-intensive.
- ● Market adoption: Convincing established engineering teams to switch from familiar, albeit flawed, software is a significant challenge.
- ● AI integration: The actual impact and defensibility of AI features need to be proven beyond conceptualization.
Founders
Michael Baron is the co-founder of Aurorin CAD, a Y Combinator startup focused on revolutionizing CAD software. His background likely includes significant experience in software development and potentially engineering or design, given the nature of Aurorin CAD. He is a graduate of the University of Waterloo.
Score Breakdown
Michael Baron's Computer Science degree from the University of Waterloo is a strong signal for technical depth. While the description implies significant experience, the lack of specific details on prior roles, projects, or previous exits prevents a higher score. The single-founder situation is a notable risk factor at this early stage.
The CAD market is massive and ripe for disruption. The stated problems of slowness and tediousness are widely acknowledged. The timing is good, as AI integration is becoming a key differentiator across industries. While competitive, the incumbent's reliance on legacy kernels presents a significant opportunity for a modern, AI-native solution. Regulatory tailwinds are neutral, but no significant headwinds are apparent.
The core idea of building a new CAD kernel with AI at its heart is technically differentiated and addresses the fundamental limitations of existing software. This offers a strong defensibility moat if executed well. However, without seeing the actual UX or understanding the depth of AI integration beyond buzzwords, it's difficult to assess its quality and platform potential. The long-term viability of a new kernel is a significant undertaking.
As a Winter 2026 batch company, traction is expected to be minimal. The presence of Y Combinator launch announcements and a Tracxn profile are positive signals of early validation and investor awareness, but no revenue or user metrics are available. Partnerships and press coverage are limited to the launch itself.
